Pastor Steve Covington of Through the Gate, a women’s residential addiction program, joins Dr. Mark E. Shaw on The Addiction Connection’s first podcast of the year. (Listen now!)
2 Corinthians 5:17 states:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (ESV)
About Through the Gate
Through the Gate begin their women’s program and planted a church with the heart of the ministry to hurting women in mind. The church and the residential program are vitally interconnected.
“Through the Gate is an intensive discipleship program tailored to help adult women struggling with addiction. Under the compassionate care of staff, former graduates, mentors, and volunteers, our residents are immersed in the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are not just a faith based treatment center, we are Christ-centered. Our program focuses on redefining world-views, developing constructive thought patterns, and fostering an examined heart. All of this is accomplished through the authority of scripture and the living hope therein.
Many graduates have been transformed through developing a knowledge and love for God’s word. The revelation of God’s wisdom and essence is the avenue for permanent and lasting change. By learning who He is and who He created us to be, we are given a new purpose and a new high that can not be matched. Our mission is to bring as many lost women as possible into a relationship with Jesus Christ, who has the power to save our souls in both this life and the next.”
Pastor Steve Covington says,
“This is intense discipleship for 8 months. There’s no distraction from a job.. that’s kinda the approach we’ve done and we’ve stuck with.”
“I remember early on, one of my goals was that one day Through the Gate would be run by graduates of Through the Gate. And I love to tell people that because that’s where I’m at now…from my development director, to the house manager, to the office manager, to the staff we have in the cleaning business that we run that supplies income to our program… it’s all run by now graduates of our program. I love that. It’s not required to be here, but it’s just beautiful to see women who Christ has changed their heart and their life now discipling the next group that come through, and that was always my heart and I love it!”
Some of the graduates of Through the Gate are now getting training in The Addiction Connection Commissioning Process and are going on to further their training in biblical counseling with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC).
Mark: “That’s why TAC exists…”
“The reason I came up with like the “Next Steps: Be TRANSFORMED” curriculum was to give churches a curriculum that they could use for addictions that would be consistent with the message that they preach on Sunday morning… consistent with the Gospel and the Word of God.”
