Sadly, there is yet another new sport for you to watch. It’s called Churchianity. You simply need to pick a big building with a Christianese sounding name on it, go when they give their times for a “worship service,” sit and listen respectfully. Then, go home. Nothing has to change.
And you can watch some of the people there participate, though not many of them! Only the experts with special “spiritual gifts” can participate. The rest of the people can sing, agree in prayer, and give money but they do little else. It’s called Churchianity.
It’s sad. But it doesn’t have to be this way. You CAN participate by having a life-transforming conversation with a true follower of Christ in a biblical counseling session or just in a conversation at a coffee shop! Then, you can go to one of these worship gatherings and really participate (that is, if they let you) by worshipping the Lord God Almighty who sent His Son to die for us!
-Mark (Churchianity is killing the American church)
NOTE:
Jesus said in Matthew 16:18b: “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” That is NOT the church I am critiquing in THIS post. Instead, I am critiquing American churchianity, the spectator sport of not participating in disciple-making (Matt. 28:18-20) by speaking the truth in love to others (Eph. 4:15-16) to build the real church: the body of Christ!
