Dr. Shaw recently had the opportunity to teach at the IBCD (The Institute for Biblical Counseling and Discipleship) in California on the topic of his new booklet:
Understanding Temptation: The War Within Your Heart
In this booklet he discusses three main ideas that will assist any biblical counselor in helping those struggling with addictions:
Identify three idolatrous heart issues in all of us.
Find out how these desires connect our flesh with the temptations of the world’s system and the devil.
Learn how counselors can work with any counselee using these temptations of the heart, especially the addicted.
IBCD has graciously published the video and audio on their website here, which is accessible for free. This workshop from the Summer Institute of 2017 will give you a brief overview of the concepts covered in the booklet, but for the entire discussion, or to use with counselees, purchase the booklet as it will prove very helpful as you work with counselees to show them God’s power within them to overcome their sin struggles.
Dr. Shaw discusses Mark 4 and Luke 4 in light of the Genesis temptations that Adam and Eve faced. He explains how Jesus was tempted in the same three basic ways in which we are tempted:
We can do what we want (Lust of the Flesh)
We can have what we want (Lust of the Eyes)
We can be what we want (Pride of Life)
In the booklet, you will find the biblical antidotes for each of these powerful temptations, and learn to be victorious over the temptations of the heart. This simple teaching will assist you as you wrestle the fleshly desires of your heart, and it will help you help others as well.
